DETECt – Detecting Transcultural Identity in European Popular Crime Narratives –addresses the formation of European cultural identity as a continuing process of transformation fostered by the mobility of people, products and representations across the continent. Because of the extraordinary mobility of its products, popular culture plays a decisive role in circulating representations that constitute a shared cultural asset for large sectors of the European society.

The project examines examples of crime fiction, film and TV dramas from 1989 to present, to learn how mobility strategies such as co-production, serialization, translation, adaptation, distribution, and more, have influenced the transnational dissemination of European popular culture. It also investigates how the treatment of specific ‘mobile signifiers’—including representations of gender, ethnic and class identities—affect the ability of European narratives to migrate outside their place of origin, and be appropriated elsewhere in different and variegated ways. Researching the contemporary history of the crime genre in Europe, DETECt aims to identify the practices of production, distribution and consumption that are best suited to facilitate the emergence of engaging representations of Europe’s enormously rich, plural and cross-cultural identity.

The knowledge acquired through a detailed research programme will be used in cultural, learning and public engagement initiatives designed to prompt the elaboration of new transnational formats for the European creative industries. These activities will profit from a set of experimental research and learning resources and innovative collaborative tools, aggregated and organized on DETECt Web portal. A range of activities will be addressed to the general public. In particular, the development of a Web mobile app tools will allow users to contribute to the creation of a collaborative atlas of European crime narratives.

The 18 partner institutions of DETECt compose the Consortium responsible for the implementation of the project as defined in the contract with the European Commissions. The Consortium is led by the coordinating beneficiary, the University of Bologna. In order to guarantee the successful and timely execution of all the planned activities, the management organization is supervised by six bodies addressing three different organizational levels: coordination level; operational level; strategic level. The roles in the projects have been distributed on the basis of the different responsibilities and main tasks performed in order to ensure a systemic management structure:

The Coordinators are Professor Monica Dall’Asta (Project Coordinator) and Professor Ilaria Bartolini (Project Technological Coordinator). They act as intermediaries between the Contractors and the European Commission, supervising the correct implementation of the project with a special, but not exclusive concentration on the research tasks.

The Project Management Team of the University of Bologna assists the Coordinators and the other partners for all administrative, legal and financial aspects.

The General Assembly  is composed by all the partner institutions. It ensures the consortium adherence to the project timetable, guarantees the quality control and assurance procedures are carried out according to their internal standards, reviews and/or amends the contract and the Consortium Agreement, and coordinates and budget rules.

The Work Package Leaders will supervise the correct implementation of all the tasks included in their WP, supporting the partners involved in these activities and acting as intermediaries between these institutions, the Coordinator and the European Commission.

The Steering Committee is composed by all the Work Package leaders. It sets the research priorities, defines the proper tools and “infrastructure” for assuring links between the different multidisciplinary research teams, performs detailed planning and co-ordination of the work, taking the responsibility for the completion and quality assurance of each WP.

The Communication and Dissemination Team is responsible for internal and external communications and ensures the effective dissemination of the internal and final results involving all relevant stakeholders, also monitoring news stories related to the project topic and preparing reports, press releases and events specifically addressed to the media.

Tasks and activities related to project management are included in WP 1.

The work package has the following goals:

  1. To coordinate and supervise activities to be carried out according to the work plan
  2. To carry out the overall administrative and financial management of the project
  3. To manage contracts with the EU Commission and the Consortium Agreement
  4. To manage the knowledge generated by the project and the IPRs
  5. To monitor quality and timing of project deliverables and to resolve conflicts
  6. To establish effective internal and external communication procedures

DETECt will promote, and extensively benefit from, the collaboration between academic and non-academic organisations. The Stakeholder Committee will coordinate the project’s activities involving non-academic partners, actively seeking to enlarge DETECt’s network of professionals, companies and public institutions.
In addition to four academic institutions (University of Aalborg, Link Campus University, University of Limoges, German Film and Television Academy Berlin), the Committee is composed by the industrial partners of the consortium: TV2, Miso Film, Visit Aaarhus, and the Bibliothèque des Littératures policières.
The activities of the Stakeholder Committee will focus on the involvement of professionals working in the literary, film and television sectors in the activities promoted by DETECt, as well as the dissemination of all the relevant project activities to the Stakeholder Network, a large group of organisations and individuals involved in the creative industries.

DETECt will promote the implementation of a vast range of initiatives aimed at maximising the impact of the project within and particularly beyond the academic community.

This goal will be reached by addressing a variety of target groups, including:

  • scholars, teacher and students in the Social Sciences and the Humanities
  • professionals of the creative industries
  • policy makers
  • fans and critics of popular culture
  • the general public

In order to disseminate the research findings to these audiences, and to involve them in the dissemination activities, the DETECt partners will produce a large number of outputs including:

  • two conferences and a series of conference papers and panels
  • two edited collections and a series of peer-reviewed articles
  • a series of screenings of European crime films
  • an exhibition about the history of crime fiction in Europe
  • a web portal exploring European crime narratives in fiction, film and television
  • a web mobile app mapping the locations of European crime TV shows
  • two webinars on the production of European crime films and television
  • a series of edit-a-thons of Wikipedia entries on the Europeannes of crime narratives
  • a Massive Online Open Course on the representation of European identity in crime narratives
  • a series of dissemination events involving writers, filmmakers, and TV creative and targeted at local communities.

The Dissemination and Communication Team will assure that the work carried out by the Consortium receives the appropriate coverage by mainstream and specialised media in all the countries involved in the project. To reach this goal, DETECt Project Communication Manager and the Press Office will coordinate the shared effort of all partners to attract the attention of local, national, and international media on the project’s dissemination activities.

Tasks and activities related to dissemination and communication are included in WP 7.

The work package has the following goals:

1) To provide continuous information about the project’s progress and achievements;

2) To promote the use of educational digital tools and resources among European citizens and key target groups;

3) To achieve high visibility within the academic community, promise the involvement of industrial and professional stakeholders and optimise the communication between academic and non-academic partners;
